A match begins with a coin toss. The winner throws the small target ball, called the pallino, into the playing area. That same player then throws their first large ball (bocce) with the goal of getting it as close to the pallino as possible.
In this version, teams simply alternate throws. After the first team throws their first ball, the second team throws one ball. Players continue to switch back and forth until all eight balls (four per team) have been played. This keeps everyone involved in the action throughout the entire frame.
All throws must be made underhand. You can toss the ball through the air (pointing) or bowl it along the ground (hitting). Players must stay behind the starting line (the foul line) when releasing the ball to ensure a fair match.
You are encouraged to use your ball to knock an opponent's ball away from the pallino or to knock the pallino into a more favorable position for your team. If the pallino is knocked out of the court boundaries, the frame is usually considered a wash and restarted.
Banking off the side walls is permitted, however you can only bank of the back wall IF/ONLY IF you hit another ball FIRST. Else, your ball is considered a "dead ball".
Only the team with the closest ball to the pallino scores points at the end of a frame.
They receive 1 point for every ball that is closer to the pallino than the opponent's closest ball.
Matches are first to 7 points.
